I started with Photo Ephemeris because I could use it with my desktop and did not have a portable device for photopills. This 10" tablet is hard for me to see and to type on.. waiting for the desktop version.
If you want to see the sun/moon behind an object in the evening, you have to find a place east of it to set up the tripod.
One type of photography is pointing the camera in the air and capturing things outside our atmosphere.
Things on earth that include the moon or sun.
Church steeple, famous land mark, mountain = things we want to photograph with the sun or moon in the background.
First we have to find a place to set up a tripod to be sure the object in front of the sun/moon is visible.
Using Google Earth could do that. Using street view I drove to a spot (kind of) and looked to that place.
In our turf there is a 'mountain' that people come from many places to stand on and many of us return through out our lives.
It is my favorite place to photograph because it is not too far and I can take my pup to get pets.
By sliding the little man to Broad Street I can see it is a clear view in the parking lot to see Mt Pleasant.
Thinking, Ok this is where I will set up the tripod. Using Google earth, I copy the elevation of the place the tripod will be and the elevation of the highest place on Mt P.. (moving the cursor around)
I am old as Rip Van Winkle, I could program in dos basic.. but I know the capabilities that programmers can do today.
I know that photopills has the resources to create such a program.
Enter the location where the tripod will set
Enter the phase of the moon you want in the view
Clock view, magnetic north. With your nose to the north, you would know the moon would be slightly behind your right shoulder.
If you wanted to know where the moon would appear any day at any time, just put in the day and time, your location and the direction clock would show where it would be with your nose pointing north. (12)
The weather man told his tale but when I got up early and arrived, this is what I captured
Clouds: Used time lapse thinking one of them would be a great shot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FW06W4Kgag .
No Clouds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNZdK_OLKeQ
Creating a large moon.
From what I understand, the more powerful the telephoto, the larger the moon will appear.
Standing in this parking lot I can only use a small magnification because the mountain would not fit in the frame.
So if I am right, I would have to find an area further away to keep the full mountain in the frame and enlarge the sun?
On this day I took a suite case, a tripod and my dog's leash in the other hand. Up the trail to take a bunch of pics from Mount Pleasant.
Top right not bad, bottom right very hazy so the question is, under what atmospheric conditions, what part of the day is prime for taking photos that includes things far away?
Things in photopills and the like are extensive enough to create a college course.
It is possible to create a program to enter your location, what you want to take a photo of, what type of sun or moon you want to view and the program would generate an image.
If you ever peeked at the coding used in video games, one to do these things would be child's play.
Say you wanted to capture the moon coming up behind Mount Pleasant: The yellow x the center .. what you were pointing the camera at.
(all hypothetical here)
Type in your target (yellow x), type in the phase (full moon) the program would generate a graphic of full moons along with the dates they would appear there to the right of the moons.
When you clicked on the date you wanted to go, the program would generate a line from the moon so you could view the path you would have to be at.
With out knowing any of the terms, meanings of symbols in a photo planner, the information of the time, date and where to be, could be displayed by entering a few fields.
Elevation. Google Earth will show the tripod and mountain elevation.. but it does not indicate if there are things between those two points that might be higher. I guess in an unknown location you might drag the cursor along that path and see if there were any higher points to obstruct the view.
Finding a good place to set up the tripod, for me I stood on Mt P, took photos of the city below then got home and looked for bare places. If I can see the place from the top, well from that spot I can see Mt. P. It would work for any places you can stand on looking down.
After the time and place is established, before getting in the car, the weather guy will give some info, your app may include such info but there is lots more to consider.
